20th April 1441Great Court held at Sheffield; an inquest held there , on the oath of Richard de Stanyforth [and 11 others] that [7 named others] had not appeared and the 7 were fined.
January 26 undated year but in the reign of Henry VIIIsurrender of a messuage and 2 acres of assert land in Stanyford next Wincobanck in the soke of Sowthey.
October 5th 1564Court of frankpledge at Sheffield, the wife of Nicholas Staniford was one of 49 wives fined for brewing and selling ale without permission of the assize, all fined eight pence each.
April 17th 1565Court held at Sheffield. John Stanyford came to court and took of the lord a private mark, by himself, for marking iron sickles, to wit, such mark as follows, to have and use, by himself

July 10th 1565At a court at Sheffeild, Richard Stanyfurth, present there in court, surrendered etc the reversion after his decease of one messuage then in the tenure of Hugh Elles, of one part of a barn called a baystede and another part called an outeshoite near thereto; and of four closes of land , of which one was called Narmeadowe, another Wheatefeld, another Netherhheyfeld and another Farre heyfeld, in Wincomank within the reeveship of Southey; to the use of Ann Colt daughter of [blank] Colt and her assigns for life, which reversion was granted to the aforesaid Ann, to hold to her etc, by services etc, and she gave to the lord on account of fine for entry.
--The same Richard Stanyfurth etc surrendered etc all that his messuage lands tenements rents reversions and hereditaments whatsoever , in Wyncobanke or elsewhere within the soke of Southey, containing 2 oxgangs, one croft called Haverfeld and one cottage, built in the said croft, lying below Bowrehill, only excepted;to the use of Henry Stanyfurth , son and heir of the said Richard in tail; with remainder to Richard Stanyfurth, another son of the said Richard, in tail; with remainder to Nicholas Stayfurth in tail;with remainder to Alexander Stanyfurth [relationship of Nicholas and Alexander not stated] in tail;with remainder to the right heirs of the aforesaid Richard for ever, which were granted etc, fine for entry etc.
--The same Henry Stanyfurth etc surrendered all the aforesaid messuage and premises, to the use of the aforesaid Richard for life; which were granted etc to hold to him etc by services etc and he gave the lord on account of fine for entry.
--The same Richard Stanyfurth etc surrendered etc the four closes [first above named]; to the use of Henry Stanyfurth and Ann Colt daughter of [blank] Colt and their assigns, from etc for the life of the aforesaid Richard; paying yearly to him and his assigns forty shillings of rent at etc,; and paying to the lord yearly his 4 pence of rent; at the times usual within the lordship of Halomshire; which were granted to the aforesaid Henry and Ann Colt; to hold to them etc during the life of the said Richard Stanyfurth by services according to the custom of the manor, and they gave to the lord on account of fine for entry.
June 21st 1568 Court held at Sheffield... Richard Stanyfurth surrendered atc a parvel of land called Twytchill as then divided, to wit, the west end and containing 3 acres by estimation within the soke of Southey; to the use of John Shirtcliffe etc for the term of six years; paying yearly a penny of rent at etc. To hold to him by services etc ;Fine [amount not stated].
July 6, 1591At a small court held of Gilbert Earl of Shrewsbury at Sheffield mention of '"a fourth part of a messuage and an oxgang of hastler land in Wincobanck and Stanyford in the soke of Sowthey..." a fourth part of the aforesaid messuage and lands in Wincobank and Stanyford, as then long ago divided, to wit, of and in a capital messuage with all houses and buildings standing under the same roof and of and in a structure of 2 bays in the lower end of the orchard there called the Sheepcote , ..."
Feb 15 1592At a court held at Sheffield Nicholas Stanyland and Thomas Crosley surrendered one cottage house in Tillcrofte... together with Tillcrofte, the nether leye, a piece of meadow doles, the hall laughton, the nether part of the meadowe doles and the moiety of one half of all the arable land in several townfeilds of Chappell in the parish of Ecclesfield
August 3rd 1596At a small court held at Sheffield it was presented that ...on the 29th July 1594 Nicholas Stanyland of Ecclesfield yeoman and Ann his wife ...surrendered 2 messuages or tenements and all their customary lands tenements and hereditaments in Birley within the soke of Ecclesfield aforesaid, to the use William Hide or his assigns, from the feast of Saint Martin the bishop in winter next following, for the term of twenty and three years, paying yearly to the said Nicholas Stanyland and his heirs 23 shillings and eight pence ...
October 18th 1597Court held at Sheffield, a case which mentions a cottage in Wincobanck situate in the lower part of the same next Jenny Poole [is this a person or a pool?]... formerly in the tenure of Henry Stanyforth deceased...
October 31st 1615Small court held at Sheffield. It was presented to the court that Hugh Fox on the 10th June 1614 had out of court demised granted and to farm delivered up a messuage and a half of one oxgang of land hastler in Hoppertorpe in the parish of Sheffield to a certain Nicholas Staniforth of Sheffield to hold etc for the term of 21 years paying yearly to the abovesaid Hugh Fox 5 marks. This should have been brought before the court and a fee paid to the lord of the manor. Since this wasn't done the holding had been seized into the hand of the lord. The case had come before the court and a proclamation was made in all the courts of the manor that anyone with a prior claim to the holding should come forward. None did, so at this court the holding was returned to Hugh Fox on payment of a fine of 40 shillings and an oath of loyalty to the lord.
1st April 1624 Great Court Baron ...Found by the homage for the soke of Sowthey, to wit, on the oath of John Staniforth, [and 7 others] Thomas Ryles of Skinnerthorpe died before that court, seised in his demesne as of fee etc. of and in a messuage cottage etc situate in Skinnerthorpe aforesaid,; and of and in a close or croft containing by estimation an acre lying nearby;...[ it has come to court for the son and heir Thomas Ryles applied to inherit.]
4th September 1632Court Baron at Sheffield; ... surrendered etc all that customary messuage or tenement then called Meares House, in Birley Carre and within the soke of Sowthey; and all buildings lands etc, to the same belonging or with the same usually let surrendered or occupied as part or member thereof and then or then lately in the occupation of William Staniforth; to the use of Richard Carre.
24th May 1654Countess Alethea dies in Amsterdam; and on the 6th June Fabian Philipps wrote from London, giving instructions to Mr Staniforth, the agent in Sheffield, that no wood or trees or timber be felled or carried off the lands of the Countess at Sheffield or Rotherham or in Hallamshire, other than what was fallen before the 24th May, for the use of the ironworks [Letter in full in Hunter's Hallamshire 2nd edition p 146, click here for full letter]
