Severquick Works, c1980s

The following list is an ongoing project, documenting the history of the Severquick Works Cricket Club. The team was founded by George Thomas Carter (see here), the Managing Director of the Thomas Staniforth & Co. Sickle & Scytheworks (Severquick) , at Hackenthorpe.

April 12, 1935 - Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald

At a meeting of Hackenthorpe Severquick Cricket Club, Mr. G. T. Carter, presiding, it was reported that there were 24 playing members. The team will compete in the Sheffield Works League and play friendly games also midweek. Officials’ elected were:-

Team Captain, R. Unwin; vice-captain R. Rippon; selection committee, Messrs G T. Carter, W. E Unwin, R. Unwin, H. Steel, and R. Rippon; umpires Messrs F. Rippon, W. E Unwin, and H Steel, scorer. A. Gott. The ground will be supervises by Mr. F Rippon.

First Round

Handley Welfare and Severquick Works

Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, entertained Handley Welfare on Monday. The visitors compiled 70 runs, chiefly due to a timely partnership by F. Blunt (24) and A Cowley (25). The home side battled in failing fight, but collected 54, A. Frith (15), J. Bramall (16) being chief contributors of the home side. R. Rippon secured five wickets for 24 runs and A. Frith five wickets for 25 runs.

First Defeat for Severquick Works

Batting first played a great part in the home defeat of Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, against Crown Works. The visitors were dismissed for 13 runs, and Severquick, on a drying wicket, were out for 29. Bowling for Severquick, W. R Unwin secured three wickets for 9, S. Fenton two for 9, and R. Rippon two for 21.

Second Defeat for Severquick Works

Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, were defeated on visiting L.N.E.R Sports. The home side compiled 53 runs, after six batsmen had been dismissed for 22, R. Rippon secured five for 12, S. Fenton two for 9 and L. Botham two for 17. Severquick Works lost a wicket for a single run, but a stand by Large (23_ carried the next wicket to 24. A collapse followed, and the side were dismissed for 38.

Severquick Works Win By Seven

Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, resumed the winning way on entertaining the Dominion Works, eleven, who were dismissed for 38 runs against the bowling of R. Rippon (six for 14) and S. Fenton (three for 5). Severquick Works collected 40 runs for three wickets, F. Large (21 not out) and J Feek (13 not out) giving good displays.

New Cricket Pavilion Opened at Hackenthorpe

Mrs. Carter, wife of Mr. G. T Carter, of Chesterfield, managing director of Messrs, Thomas Staniforth and Company (Severquick Works), Hackenthorpe, opened the new pavilion of the Severquick Works Cricket Club, Hackenthorpe, on Saturday afternoon, before a good crowd. Mrs. Carter said she was very proud to come over to Hackenthorpe to perform such a pleasing duty. She was presented with a solid silver key by Miss Barbara Unwin, of Frecheville, a replica of the key needed to open the pavilion with which she performed the ceremony. A bouquet was handed to her by Miss Betty Needham of Beighton. Mr. Carter, on behalf of his wife, said he felt the cricket club was an important part of the works and he hoped that the cricket club would prosper.

Mr. R. W. Unwin, manager of the works, thanked Mr. Carter for his generosity and consideration in making a gift of 25 pound towards the expense of the hut. He said the financial position of the club did not allow the purchasing of a new hut.

Hackenthorpe Works Cricket Club’s Progress

Mrs Carter of Chesterfield, wife of Mr. G.T Carter, managing director of Messrs Thomas Staniforth and Co Ltd, Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, opened the new pavilion of the Severquick Works Cricket Club on Saturday.

Mr Carter presided and in reminding them that Derbyshire were first-class champions last year, hoped that Severquick Works Club would follow their example in their particular league. It had been a pleasure to him, he said, to make the working conditions of the firm as up-to-date as possible and it was his desire to better the sporting facilities.

Mr. W. R Unwin, works joint manager, captain and secretary to the cricket club, gave a resume of the club’s activities and added that it was due to the foresight and generosity of Mr Carter that they had such a pavilion. Mr. Carter had made a gift of 20 pounds towards the cost.

To Perform the ceremony, Mrs. Carter was presented with a silver key and case by Miss Barbara Unwin of Frecheville, daughter of the works joint-manager, and a bouquet was handed to Mrs. Carter by Miss Betty Needham, of Beighton, daughter of Mr. E. Needham, works joint manager.

Double Defeat for Severquick Works

Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe, sustained their fourth defeat on visiting Marshall’s Sports. The home side compiled 88 runs against the bowling of R Rippon, five for 40, S. Fenton three for 25, and W. R Unwin two for 22. Severquick Works’ opening batsmen failed badly and six wickets were down for 16 (16) could not save the game, and their side were out for 34.

Severquick Works gained their fourth away success by four wickets when visiting Sheaf Bank, who were dismissed for 61 runs, S. Fenton bowled remarkably well early in the game, having six wickets without a run being scored off him, but his final analysis was seven wickets for 21 runs. Severquick gained victory for the loss of six wickets, R. Rodgers (19), A. T Carter (14 not out), Keeton (12) and F. Large (12 not out) batting well.

Severquick Works’ Keen Bowling

Severquick Works, Hackenthorpe performed the double victory on entertaining M.S.C Sports, who were dismissed for 31 runs as a result of deadly bowling by S. Fenton (seven for 9) and R Rippon (two for 12). The home batsman also experienced trouble, and only the timely stands by B. Barker (12 not out) and E Feek (11) enabled the side to win with three wickets to spare


April 21, 1939 - Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald

At a special meeting of the Severquick Works (Hackenthorpe) Cricket Club, it was decided not to run a team in the Sheffield and District Works League in the coming season. It was stated a few friendly matches might be played but the wicket is to be reconstructed for the 1940 season.

Severquick Leave Sheffield League

After competing in the Sheffield and District Works League for several seasons, the Severquick (Hackenthorpe) Works Cricket Club have decided not to compete in competitive matches this season owing to the shortage of experienced players.

They will play a number of friendlies, but hope to preserve their wicket as much as possible to give it time to recover. Other improvements are to be made to the ground.
