Litfield Farm prior to renovations that took place in 2006

Litfield Farm today is a small farm located on Sloade Lane, Ridgeway. It does however seem that in previous centuries this was a collection of farms and plots of land, as we find reference to numerous Staniforths and other families owning land in 'Lytfield' and 'Litfield' from the late 1500s onwards.

Using a range of records including the Eckington Manor Court Rolls, Census records, Wills and later directories, we get a picture of how land was passed down, and it is evident that multiple Staniforth groups owned land here at different stages.

Lane R Ellis, descendent of Olive Staniforth and John Ellis of Ridgeway compiled the following timeline in an effort to try and group these families together:

Manor Court Roll - 16th February 1579 - Surrender by Robert SITWELL by William LEE and Henry ..., his attorneys by virtue of a letter of attorney dated the last day of ... 21 Elizabeth [1578 or 1579], of his half part...called Pymeast or LYTFIELD lying in Ridgeway then in the tenure of Elizabeth ODLEY and Ralph STANYFORD, to the use of the same Ralph STANYFORD and Helen his wife, their heirs and assigns. Ingress 3s4d.

Manor Court Roll - 24th April 1587 - Surrender by Ralph STANYFORDE and Helen his wife, of a messuage in Ridgeway and the close in which it was situated, containing 6 acres and called PYEMESTE; also 2 closes in Ridgeway called LYTFELD containing 5 acres; which premisis were in the tenure of Stephen TUDMAN but later Ralph STANYFORD of his assigns, to the use of Robert SYTWELL, his heirs and assigns. Ingress 5s6d. [Robert then surrendered the properties back to Ralph and Helen from the feast of Philip and James, apostles, [1 May] next for 21 years paying therefor to Robert and his heirs, 20s per year at Pentecost and Michaelmas in equal parts. Ingress 2s9d]

1624-1630 - William Staniforth was established at "Littfield" at that time as a Shearsmith.

1630 William Staniforth, late of Litfield shearsmith mentioned in his son John's Apprentice record, he gains his freedom from his father in 1630.

1630 William Staniforth of Litfield, near Ridgeway dies in 1630

1631-1636 Robert Staniforth, son of William Staniforth of "Littfield" is noted as being apprenticed to hsi father for four years, upon his death he is transferred to William Crowley of Little Norton, shearsmith for a period of 5 years, beginning in 1631 until 1636 where he took his freedom

Manor Court Roll - 6th April 1636 It was further presented that on 12 March last, out of court, Robert STANYFORTH sen. of Ford, tanner, by Thomas STANIFORTH and Robert COWLEY jun., surrendered a messuage at Ford and a messuage lying in LITTFIELD together with a close called the ING between lands of John STANYFORTH, south, west and north, and the common of Ridgeway, east; also another close called the OVERCLOSE between lands of John STANYFORTH, north and east, and Thomas KENT, west, then in the tenure of Robert STANYFORTH sen. or his assigns, to the use of Robert STANIFORTH, second son of the aforesaid Robert sen., his heirs and assigns. Ingress 20d.

This is where we get confusing information, Robert Staniforth, the Tanner, was not the same Robert that earned his apprenticeship as a Shearsmith, there were two Roberts at Ford during this time period, and from this record we can see they both had land in Litfield.

24th May 1636 Robert the Shearsmith is granted mark 'HC'
