John Patteson

John Patteson was born on November 19th, 1755 in Norwich, England. His father was Henry Sparke Patteson, an Ironmonger and Brewer.

John served as Alderman in Norwich from 1781 to 1831, and was also High Sheriff in 1785, and Mayor in 1788. During the 1802 General Elections, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Minehead in Somerset. He held this position until the 1806 General Election, where he returned as an MP for Norwich. He held this position until being defeated in the 1812 General Elections.

He was also the president of the Norwich Union Life Assurance Society, which later became the Norwich Union, from 1815 until his death in 1833.

John's wife was Elizabeth Staniforth, the daughter of Robert Staniforth, a descendent of the Wincobank line of Staniforths.

The couple had three sons and a daughter:

  1. John Staniforth Patteson (1782-1833), he married Ann Elizabeth Tasker and would also become Mayor of Norwich
  2. William Patteson (1784-1796)
  3. Robert Dossie Staniforth (1788-1814)
  4. Catherine Patteson (1785-1786)

John was also a notable brewer, founding the Steward & Patteson Brewery in 1793

John passed away in 1833, his wife followed in 1838.
